Hate mail and negative comments are a good thing. Why? Because you are creating something that people will want to read. If people are sticking around long enough to send you hate mail or to post negative comments then you are giving them something worth reading, worth thinking about, and most importantly something that lights their passion on the subject. That is a really good thing. But how do you deal with it?
What to do about negative comments? Post them, let them through, show that you are not afraid to put yourself out there and let people disagree with you. It is a very powerful thing to do.
Limit your negative comments. If all you are doing is getting negative comments then you might want to pay attention to them. You might just be doing something wrong. However if you are getting just a few every once and awhile then do this.
- Delete the most nasty, negative, offensive, and otherwise stupid comments. (I do not use stupid often but sometimes that is just what it is)
- Take the negative comments that are constructive criticism and let them post. Then take a little time to respond to them. DO NOT ARGUE. In a polite simple way thank them for the suggestions, comments, or corrections; tell them that you will take them into consideration for next time; and ask them to continue reading and feel free to let you know what you think about any other articles that they may have read.
- Take note of their username. If it is a username that constantly criticizes and puts you down you may want to eventually ban them from posting. They may be trying to promote a competitive site trying to make themselves look like an authority.
Again negative comments can be very good for your blog. You are putting yourself out there, letting people know you are human, and starting a good dialogue. If you get a good dialogue about your posts you are doing great.
Ignore it! Just the opposite of negative comments. Ignore them. Most hate mail is just ridiculous. Don’t take it personally. There are a lot of people out there who have nothing better to do than sit at home and try to tear everyone else down. It has nothing to do with you. They are having problems in their life and are looking for an outlet. It has nothing to do with you. You are on the right track because you are getting traffic. We can’t limit Internet traffic to just sane people who want to love our site. Everyone gets in, even the crazies. It has nothing to do with you. So delete them. Sure every once and awhile there may be a good suggestion, but those are not what I am talking about. I am talking about the cuss laden, no sense making, silly comments that mean nothing, and do not help you one bit. It has nothing to do with you.
Did I mention it has nothing to do with you? Yes it is a difficult thing to realize and accept but it is true. Do your best to develop a thick skin. For those of us who teach in a Metro School system you probably have already developed that. Be confident in what you are doing and know that it is a misdirected passive aggressive behavior that just does not need to exist in your life.
Both hate mail and negative comments are a good thing. It means that you are creating content that is worth reading and commenting on. It means that you are getting some great traffic to your site. It also means that you are putting yourself out there. Experts and successful people will always have their haters. As our students say ‘Let the haters hate’, you move on and keep doing what you are doing. If you are extremely confident and good at what you do you will celebrate the hate and negativity.
